FNP Preceptors are out there!
How to Find the Right FNP Preceptors: A Guide for Future Nurse Practitioners
In the quest to find the ideal fnp preceptors, many nursing students find themselves at a crossroads. Where should you start? How should you approach this task? Here’s a roadmap to help you navigate through this process.
1. Harness School Resources
Your educational institution is a good starting point to find fnp preceptors. Many schools maintain a list of preceptors they’ve previously collaborated with. While this list might not always be up-to-date (with some preceptors not having taken on a student for years), it’s still a solid first step.
2. Dive into LinkedIn
Utilize LinkedIn to connect directly with potential fnp preceptors. By reaching out to them personally, you bypass the busy office channels. Direct messages on platforms like LinkedIn can be surprisingly effective.
3. Pick Up the Phone
When digital connections don’t pan out, hit the phones. Dial local physician and nurse practitioner offices. Your aim? Not the actual preceptor, but someone arguably even more essential: the office manager. They’re the gatekeepers of these institutions, and your most promising lead.
When you call, rather than asking directly for the preceptor, inquire about speaking with the individual responsible for scheduling students. Often, this is the office manager.
4. Master the Voicemail Game
It’s not uncommon to be redirected to voicemail. If that happens, ensure you leave an engaging and friendly voicemail that’s concise yet informative.
5. Grab that Email Address
Post-voicemail, ring back and ask the receptionist for the office manager’s email. Let them know you’ve left a voicemail but would prefer to discuss further details over email. Given the hectic schedules of office managers, emails are often a more efficient mode of communication.
6. Craft a Persuasive Email
After you get the email, pen a compelling message. Your subject line? Something simple, like “Quick Follow-Up from Voicemail”. Break down your requirements succinctly and ensure it’s easy for the manager to get a clear picture of your request.
7. Follow-Up is Essential
Once you’ve successfully engaged with an office manager and they’ve expressed an interest in hosting you, stay proactive. The medical realm is notorious for its mountains of paperwork. By keeping in touch and occasionally nudging them, you ensure you remain on their radar.
Remember, medical paperwork is cumbersome. But as nurses, we’re no strangers to this. So, just be patient and regularly touch base. If necessary, offer to meet them briefly in person to expedite the process, even if it means bringing them their favorite latte as a token of appreciation.
