Let’s talk about finding a preceptor in Bakersfield. Or as I like to call it: the NP version of The Amazing Race. You’re emailing clinics, calling front desks, waiting three weeks for a “maybe,” and somehow always ending up on a wild goose chase that leads to… absolutely nowhere. Bakersfield’s got some great providers, don’t get me wrong, but trying to actually connect with one as a student? That’s a whole other story.
For whatever reason—saturation, burnout, maybe just bad luck—Bakersfield’s become one of those cities where students get stuck. Like, really stuck. We hear from people who’ve tried to line up rotations for months with no luck. And it’s not because they’re not trying—most of them are sending really thoughtful emails and following all the rules. The truth is, a lot of clinics just aren’t set up for student placements. Or if they are, the preceptors are overwhelmed or already booked out by six different schools.
And look, I’ve seen some students get creative. I once had a student print out a whole resume packet with a handwritten note and drive it around Bakersfield in 110-degree heat. (Legend.) But even that doesn’t always work. It’s like, unless you know someone who knows someone, the doors stay locked.
So if you’re in that boat—sitting in your scrubs at 2am wondering if you’ll ever get a psych rotation—you’re not alone. Bakersfield can be a tough nut to crack. There are great preceptors there, but finding them can take more time than you’ve got. I just want you to know it’s not you. It’s the system. And yeah, it’s frustrating.
